As I've said many time I have pretty close connections with the auto industry. Not only am I currently interning for a supplier but my Dad works for one too.
These places are very interesting places to be at the moment. The people who work here have adapted to a very peculiar situation, they don't know if they'll have a job next week. En mass everyone is trying to come up with Plan B's...something they can do when the whole industry implodes (which may happen any day).
Some say they'll just take the summer off, go to the cabin or play golf. Others are freaking out! What are these people supposed to do? most have young families and are probably still paying off their school loans for a degree that will soon be rendered useless (unless they want to move to Indian or China)
My plan B involves moving out of State, although the idea of selling deck chairs on a beach in Hawaii is certainly becoming appealing.
There isn't really a point to this post and I'm certainly not saying anything that hasn't already been said before but these people are quaking in their cubicles. Everyone knows someone who's out of work, and all those people aren't even getting interviews. These people are living in limbo and the problem is that this stuff may never get sorted out.
No matter how many jobs the Michigan government tries to bring in with incentives, there is no way they will replace the vast amount that will be lost if/when the auto industry tanks (well, even furter than it already is), and while they try and bring some income into the state the people who work for the big three and their suppliers will surely struggle to keep their heads above water. This is the reality and it seems to me that for all the talk, no one has any idea how these people, and this state will survive.
